Ka Ka Lok – Take Away

Here is something a little different for the blog – A Take Away review. I am not sure why I’ve never done a take away review before now, I eat a serious amount of delicious take away food and I think it is also an important part of the Glasgow Food scene.

For those of you who don’t follow me on twitter (erm..why not? I’m hilarious!! :-P) we got a new member of Team Geek in the last few weeks in the form of a little ball of fluffy loveliness – Leo the puppy. As you can imagine we have been inundated with people wanting to pop into see us. One of Leo’s first visitors were on Friday night when we had 2 of our best friends come by after work for puppy cuddles and some lovely take away.

My go to take away is first and foremost always Chinese food. I love it but somehow hardly ever go out to eat in Chinese restaurants – something that I vow to remedy soon. When I saw Ka Ka Lok open up on St. George Street literally next door to Glasgow Institution Asia Style I did wonder about how well it would do, but to my delight it is holding its own. Whenever I drive past it is always packed with people and I have heard incredible things from the Glasgow Foodinati so I couldn’t wait to try it.

KaKaLok Take Away -  delivery

First point of interest is they only do collection and don’t offer home delivery but that didn’t bother me as it is a 2 minute drive from my front door. Plus that just insures you are getting it back home asap rather than be driven around half of the west end before a delivery man reaches you.

KaKaLok Take Away -  Menu

Second point of interest they have 2 different menus on offer an English menu packed full of the traditional English Chinese favourites – Chow Mein, Kung Po, Satay, Sweet and Sour…etc. They also offer a Chinese menu stuffed full of exotic and tempting sounding dishes – Duck with Black Pepper Ho Fan Soup, Monk Fish & Tofu with rice, Three Stuffed Treasures (I’ve no idea what the treasures are), Salt & Chilli Frogs legs….wow! I wish I was brave enough to order from this menu but I decided I would prefer to sit in to try it out so the staff could help me in choosing my dishes.

KaKaLok Take Away -  Dumplings

I ordered a wee starter of Pan Fried Dumplings which were utterly delicious, I wish I could tell you I put them on a plate but in all honestly they were devoured standing up while I was putting my main dish on to a plate. They were some of the nicest Gyoza I have ever eaten. The serving of 6 dumpling were plump, very obviously fresh, light and just gorgeous.

KaKaLok Take Away -  Fried Rice

For my main I went for the Crispy Shredded Chicken with Peking Sauce with a side of Fried Rice. The portions were absolutely huge. It was bursting with flavour and so much delicious chicken – I would definitely order this again (and probably will). Small side note – beware the chillis, I avoided them but my friends ate them and they were fiery.

KaKaLok Take Away -  Salt and chilli battered chips

I got to try some of the Salt & Chilli battered chips which are insanely good. Don’t be fooled into thinking it will be battered in yucky heavy chip shop like batter. This batter was extremely light and it was spiced just right for me in that there was a little kick but not screaming hot.

Check them out guys a great wee take away and I can’t wait to sit in the restaurant because I could only imagine it would be even better.

    My wife loves Ka Ka Lok but i’m more of a purist and prefer Asian Gourmet round the corner from it. It’s sad to see the decline of Asia Style but their food has went downhill over the years and with folk getting more discerning they haven’t been able to keep up with the other 2.

    The three treasures are roast chicken, belly roast pork and roast duck. They are amazing.
